June Gloom

June gloom is here. Ever wonder why we see he sun
less in May and June than other months?
During May and June in Southern California the outer
waters up-well and cool due to strong NW winds.
Marine stratus, or fog is formed when warmer land air
meets the cooler ocean water. The NW winds also cause
a costal eddy which circulates the marine stratus
onshore and well inland. In July the NW winds stop,
the outer waters warm, the eddy stops and the June
gloom goes away.
About 50% of our days in May and June are gloomy. We complain about the June gloom but at least we don't live in San Francisco. They have fog all summer long because the costal waters up-well all summer.
